Some high-end and adventurous surfers have secret waxes they don't want anyone to know about.
When Taj Burrow returned to his hometown of Sydney from the Billabong Pro Brazil in May,
The feature wasn't about the runner-up trophy she received in Rio, but about overweight baggage on an airplane.
He flew from Brazil to Australia and brought back about 20 kilograms of wax.
(Each FU WAX is 75 grams, so that's about 260 pieces!)
He now has enough of the secret wax to last him forever.
Taj learned about this secret wax from Kolohe Andino and became obsessed.
Then, one by one, the secret spread to his friends, and Nat won the Cold Water Classic in Santa Cruz,
He gave a passionate speech about the wax.
Luke Davis told Kolohe, who didn't know the secret yet.
"This is seriously damn amazing! This is the best surf wax I've ever used in the world!"
Kolohe ignored Luke's assertion, "This is so fucking amazing! Your wax sucks."
That is, until Brazilian surfer Wiggoly Dantos stayed with Kolohe during a Trestles tournament.
Wiggory suggested Kolohe try it, and when he did, Kolohe was shocked.
"Oh my gosh! I should have listened to Luke sooner. I'm in love with this. It feels like I have traction on my forefoot," Kolohe remembers of his first experience.
Is Brazilian wax really that good? "No one will believe it at first."
Taj emailed me from Brazil saying, "Where can I buy that wax? I want some of that awesome stuff."
"This wax is like a drug. You should try it," Kolohe said.
Taj, like many other pro surfers on the tour, used to use Sex Wax (Quick Humps) all the time, but his style has changed.
When I asked Brazilian surfer Adriano de Souza, he said casually, "I use hard Sex wax as a base and then Brazilian wax on top. That's the best." He said it wasn't anything to make a big fuss about.
Jamie O'Brien reportedly laughed off "their silly wax theory".
Jamie told me about the time he saw Evan Geiselman waxing a board and then changing it for another block of wax mid-way through.
"Evan picked up another block of wax and looked at me funny as he was applying it, and I said, 'What's with that silly look on your face?' And he said to me, 'It's a secret.'"
Do you want it? It's called "FU WAX." It's a little hard to find.
How do you create the perfect wax traction?
1. Draw crosses (X marks) all over the board using FU BASE or hard SEX wax.
2. Gently rub the product from the front of the front legs to the tail until small beads form.
3. Switch to FU Wax
4. Apply the wax flat (old school style) and watch as the fibers appear, the grip develops and the wax comes to life.
5. Your surfing demonstrates what's possible in the ocean.
