Title: "The design is suitable for all riders"
This sentence is amazing!
Matt "Mayhem" Biolos proudly brought out a board displayed on the wall in the second-floor lobby of Lost Surfboards headquarters. The tattered board, covered in scratches and discolored with browning, was an old round-nose fish designed by Mayhem. I wondered why such a poorly made board was displayed alongside vintage boards like Mark Richards' twin fins. "This board is what I built my house on," Mayhem replied. "I'll be honest, when I first shaped the round-nose fish, I didn't even know anything about previous fish designs. But now this design has become a huge hit." As Mayhem handed me the board, I checked its dimensions and the condition of the scratches. I immediately understood what Mayhem meant by "a huge hit"—it was a design that appealed to all riders. Mayhem then carefully placed the board back where it belonged and led me into his small workshop.
Across from his desk is a video editing room where videographer Joe Alani is busily editing his new film, 5'5" x 19 1/4" Redux. I enter the editing room and sit down, and a giant monitor shows footage of Corey Lopez. The wave on the monitor is circling the inside in an endless tube. I'm already staring at the screen, but Mayhem says, "Don't miss it. This is the best wave I've ever seen."
Mayhem's lines were never even remotely over the top.
...And after this, there will be more in-depth stories about fishboards in this magazine.
