The waves at the beach break near San Clemente have finally flattened out, I went to LOWERS where it seemed like I could still surf even in times like these. This is a SET wave. There are several SET waves every few minutes. The waves were small so there were only about 5-6 people surfing. Nishii rode the SUB-DRIVER XTR PARALLEL-FLEX. The XTR PARALLEL-FLEX is a light board that floats well and moves smoothly in weak waves of waist-chest size. Chris has been testing the 6'3" RNF test board upgrade on T-Street since this morning. He asked me to film him surfing because he wanted to check out his riding, so today I went to T-Street to film Chris surfing. The waves were long enough to ride from offshore to inside. Chris was swinging his 6'3" RNF board around, smashing lips with powerful lines and verticals. In the slow section, he showed us exemplary riding by noseriding to connect waves. Chris's impressive surfing was made even more impressive by the size of his board, and the amount of spray flying was incredible. His daughter Maria, who has a day off from school, is spending the day surfing with her dad until the sun goes down. Nishii was taking photos from the top of the lifeguard tower. Chris found that the nose of the new RNF (tip rocker) was more effective than he had expected. When you turn the board at the top and point it towards the bottom, or when you connect tricks, The nose releases nicely and doesn't skim the water surface, so rail turns can be made smoothly, which he says is "very effective." This morning, Chris called me saying he wanted to ride the board he had yesterday again, so I went to his house to pick him up. Today we were shooting a video for Chris on T-Street in San Clemente. (A local who is curious about a board he's never seen before) We checked out a few other spots for waves, but Chris wanted to go to "T-STREET." Yesterday we were able to capture some amazing riding on a 5'11" round nose, with explosive air and power turns. This is a photo I took right afterwards when I went to show it to Chris and Mayhem. Everyone at the beach agreed that Chris looked better than he had been in the past. Chris said he definitely wanted this board to be his signature model. After watching the video, Mayhem agreed and said, "OK, we can make it even better with some improvements to the board design!" That's typical Mayhem. The factory also had a board made for Chris, so we picked it up. Two drivers and a Whiplash. Chris, who has gained weight, seems to like DRIVER. The guy who rode the board today said that the feeling he got when surfing was exciting. He says he'll be riding a 5'11" round nose board tomorrow instead of a new one.
