Model explanation
This board is designed for super high performance surfing.
The Pocket Rocket is the best model we've worked on with Kolohe Andino and many other WSL surfers. It was developed for Kolohe Andino to ride at various beach breaks in Europe in 2015.
After years of riding only Drivers and Sub-Drivers, he requested a new rocker board that would fit more in the pocket, push harder, but still be fast in flatter waves. Quite the challenge.
He made a few and scribbled "POCKET ROCKET" on them. He started off with a string of success in WQS events. He also had solid performances in WCT events in France and Portugal.
It has a smooth, continuous rocker to fit in the wave pocket, and enough concave to rocket down the line and across flat waves. With a generously rounded tail, the Pocket Rocket turns tight, releases the tail with ease, and a generous forward curve pushes and connects. The Pocket Rocket was quickly adopted by our team riders and traveling pros.
It also became popular among casual surfers when we introduced EDD (EVERY DAY DIMS) to the average surfer looking to ride a high performance design.
In 2016, Joan Drew rode the Pocket Rocket as his quiver in the WCT.
Young Brazilian Yago Dora has been riding a Pocket Rocket as his quiver, winning the Newcastle Pro, famously defeating three World Champions in a row, and finishing in the semi-finals at the Rio Pro as a wildcard, all while riding a Pocket Rocket.
Since the start of 2015, most of our team riders, from the legendary Taj Burrow to San Clemente's exciting Griffin Colapinto, have been riding Pocket Rockets as their regular competition board. Mason Ho's performances in Indonesia and Hawaii have been dominated by Pocket Rockets. Current icon Bruce and future icon Jack Robinson are also Pocket Rocket riders.
The Pocket Rocket is the foundation of a high performance board, a performance shortboard.
There's also a squash tail for the Kolohe style (for easier, softer surfing, and for surfers who lead with their feet) or a round tail for surfers looking for more functionality in more powerful waves.
The board's moderate rocker is very smooth without any twists or bumps. I designed it with more rocker curve in the middle of the board than usual (and less at the tip). I knew Kolohe, accustomed to boards with more rocker throughout the board, would need the speed and control to make tight, radical turns in the pocket of the wave without losing speed or drive.
While maintaining ample rail rocker, he's added a concave to the stringer line between his feet, extending it all the way down the back third of the board. This is designed for more lift and speed when diving deeper. The whole board is packed with features that allow for radical high performance in the power pockets of the wave.
I wrote "Pocket Rocket" on my first board (5'11" 18.75" 2.32" 27.05cl). Kolohe took it to Europe, rode it to the quarterfinals of the Azore WQS 10,000, and then won the Cascais Pro-WQS 10,000 a week later. After winning a few heats, he emailed me, "Pocket Rocket!"
We feel that the development of Pocket Rocket has been a success, and our next step is the QuickPro-France WCT.
Kolohe beat King Kelly on the same board. We were in France with him that week and knew this was the board for surfers looking for a modern, high-performance board built with competitor feedback. The performance of our latest shortboard, the Kolohe, proved that.
Kolohe has always preferred boards with built-in drive and a little more surface area and volume, so we don't think this design is super pro, but it's not extreme by any means. The deep concave and rounded rail rocker give it lift and pop, even in small, weak waves.
The overall wide, conservative rocker and outline give you confidence even in very powerful waves. You can enjoy high performance surfing in small, fast beach breaks, and it moves well even at chest to 1.5x overhead. This is our high-end, high-performance shortboard model.
As the name suggests, this board lets you perform tricks like rocketing out of the wave's pocket. The pocket is the most powerful and hollowed section of the wave. The thin, narrow tail allows you to stay in the pocket and surf even when the wave is powerful. You can push off with the tail and sink down, creating sharp tracks. Kolohe also demonstrated the board's unique performance by performing a world-class combination of exiting the tube and immediately performing an air reverse. If you want to turn in the pocket and perform maneuvers like Kolohe, then try the Pocket Rocket!
Introducing a super high performance model that not only competitors but anyone who wants to try high performance surfing will want to try!
