Model explanation
The base model for the RETRO RIPPER-JP is the USA model, the RETRO RIPPER. The RETRO RIPPER USA model is designed for slightly larger waves, but it lacks volume for its length. Therefore, we requested Mayhem to create a model that would suit the wave conditions in Japan, assuming it would be ridden by petite Japanese adult surfers over 35 years old. We revised the overall design of the board to give it more buoyancy and volume, making it easier for weekend surfers in Japan to ride, and it's a Japan-exclusive model.
The pointed nose area looks sharp but has plenty of buoyancy, and not only does it have a gentler sense of stability than it looks, but Nishii and Mayhem call the speed of paddling and takeoff the post-Diablo series.
The shape design is cutting edge and up to date, but incorporates the design of 80's boards. The Retro model name comes from the beak nose and steeply dropped tapered rail shape design, which are influenced by 80's surfboards, and the large MAYHEM mark, which was first hand-painted by Mayhem.
The flat deck construction has the thickest part in the center of the board, so you can enjoy faster paddling performance than the CL number. The bottom design has a single concave at the entry, which changes to a double concave in the front of the fin, and then gets steeper from the end center fin area to the rear. The VEE bottom design is a great match for the flat deck construction and allows the board to be easily swung around.
The first thing that catches your eye is the unique and distinctive "Double Wing Super Swallow Tail" design.
Not only does it narrow in two stages for each wing towards the tail end, but the 1.5 inch cut of the Super Swallow Tail also
It allows for quick and sensitive control without giving off a large amount of buoyancy, even when your back foot is slightly forward.
The RETRO RIPPER-JP is equipped with a five-fin plug, so it can be ridden with tri-fins, twin-plus-one fins, or quad fins. The recommended fin setting for this RETRO RIPPER-JP is the quad fin. The RETRO RIPPER-JP's dedicated quad rear fin is positioned closer to the center fin than a standard quad rear fin. The ride feels somewhere between the looseness of a quad and the end fin pivot of a tri-fin. The RETRO RIPPER-JP's dedicated quad fin setting helps prevent rails from being eaten by the wave when turning, allowing for smooth rotation all the way to the tail, making surfing easier, even in waves that aren't particularly good (thick and hollow).
The model logo mark is also new, and is available in three colors: green, blue, and red to match the 1987' MAYHEM and rail logo mark.
The "RETRO RIPPER-JP" is a post-Diablo model that not only has a cool look that makes you want to ride it with its shape design, logo mark, and tail design, but also has paddle and take-off performance that is just as good as the Diablo series. It is a concept design that is sure to be the top choice for current Diablo series fans as their next board.
