He had been practicing on a board he had purchased second-hand, but an acquaintance pointed out that his board didn't have enough buoyancy, so he came to us for advice on finding the right board size. The board he was using seemed to be wide, but had thick laminates like a classic board, and was heavy, so it seemed to sink and didn't have the right amount of buoyancy. Since he seemed to have been practicing hard, we recommended a 5'10" board size, not a beginner's board size, but one that would help him improve and suit his current level.
