The Forbes wave in front of the resort where I'm staying There is a light break called Burger World, about 20 minutes away by boat. A light break called Nipsi. Also, about 10 minutes from the island is a follow-up break called Wright's Last Resort. I'm surfing them for now. Each session was accompanied by a team of photographers. Learn moreThe second report on Nishii and Mayhem's father-son surf trip!
This is the second part of the surf trip report by Nishii and Mayhem. This time they stayed at Kandui Resort in the Mentawai Islands. This is Nishii's second time here, the last time being in May 2021. At that time, the coronavirus had just started and there was no lockdown yet, so masks and immigration checks were very strict, and I remember having to go through inspections multiple times in my car to get here. Even within the Mentawai Islands, this resort offers facilities and comforts comparable to a five-star hotel. We were given three meals a day at the restaurant, and a photo and video crew was also available. You can see them on the restaurant monitors during dinner time that day. There are countless spots within 30 minutes by boat, and the swell and wind will take you to some great breaks. The Wi-Fi is also good, so you can work there too. https://www.mentawaiislands.com/home Kandui Resort website is here.
Learn moreThe board Nishii used was a 5'4" Round Nose Fish 96, which he picked up from the shop for this trip.
We took the boat at 6am and arrived at Kandwi Resort around noon. After lunch, we went out surfing with Mayhem. The kids went to another spot, and Mayhem and I were able to surf the right reef break right in front of a resort called Four Bobs, which we had all to ourselves for four hours. Nishii's board was a 5'4" Round Nose Fish 96, which he picked up from the shop for this trip. He usually rides a 5'5" stock board, but this time he tried a 5'4" Round Nose Fish 96, one size smaller. Mayhem was riding a new model that will be released soon. https://youtu.be/dWQICqBTqa8
Learn moreThe Nishii and MAYHEM family's 10-day surf trip has begun!
Last night, Nishii flew from Haneda to Bali Jakarta Airport in Indonesia. After transferring to a domestic flight from Jakarta, we arrived at Padang Airport, which took about two hours. We checked into the new Santika Hotel, which is about a 40-minute drive from Padang Airport. Here we meet Mayhem and his family, who are heading from Bali. We will check out of the hotel at 7am tomorrow morning and board the boat for about 6 hours. We head to Kandui Resort in the West Surf area of the Mentawai Islands. We will be updating this blog with updates on the 10-day surf trip by the Nishii and Mayhem families, so please look forward to it. https://youtu.be/dWQICqBTqa8
Learn moreNishii went on a whirlwind trip to Costa Rica!
Nishii went on a whirlwind trip to Costa Rica! Nishii, who is currently staying in LA, went to Costa Rica because he was invited to a wedding. I had a free day during the trip, Since I had come all the way to Costa Rica, I decided to go to a surf spot called Witches Rock, which appears in Endless Summer 2. It's a two-hour chartered car ride and a one-hour boat ride. It is difficult to access, as you have to jump into the sea from the board and paddle from the offshore to the beach. A large rock called Witch's Rock formed a sandbar, making it a punchy beach break that broke to the right and left. Unfortunately the waves were small, but we were able to have the place to ourselves as a group of three in a great location. This short trip will be on YouTube, so please look forward to it.

Learn moreThe Philippines is still cheaper than other countries, so it looks like it will become a popular surf trip destination in the future.
It's Cloud Nine in the Philippines. You can get to Chagaluo Island from Japan in just about a five-hour flight, flying from Narita or Haneda to Manila or Cebu in the Philippines, then transferring to a domestic flight. You'll be in a tropical paradise in no time. The island is filled with energetic islanders, and there are plenty of delicious meals thanks to restaurants run by foreigners from around the world who have escaped the crowds in Bali. Prices are also lower than in Japan today, making it cheaper than other countries, and it's likely to become a popular surf trip destination in the future.
